What Does The Cat Eat?

For conscious cat owners who want to understand what their cat truly needs — and why so many cats today are not getting it.

You love your cat. You want the best for them.

And yet — standing in the pet food aisle, or scrolling through endless options online — it can feel completely overwhelming. Every brand claims to be complete. Every bag says "natural." Every vet has a different opinion.

So what does your cat actually need?

The answer starts not in a pet shop — but in nature. Because before we can talk about what to feed your cat, we need to understand what your cat is.

The Cat Is a Carnivore — And That Cannot Be Changed

No matter how much we might wish otherwise — for environmental reasons, for ethical reasons, for convenience — the biology of a cat is non-negotiable.

The cat is a predator. A true carnivore. Its entire body — its teeth, its digestive system, its metabolism — is designed to hunt, kill, and consume other animals. This is not a preference. It is biology. And we cannot go against it, no matter how advanced our food technology becomes.

This is the foundation everything else must be built on.

When a cat's diet does not match what its body is designed to process, the body struggles. Quietly at first — small imbalances, subtle signs. And then, over time, those imbalances grow. And we call them diseases.

Why Are So Many Cats Sick Today?

We are seeing a sharp and alarming rise in lifestyle diseases in cats — and in some cases, in very young animals.

In my view, there is a fundamental reason for this. Just as humans are affected by what we eat, so are our animals. And despite all our advances, humans have not yet invented a single food that provides everything needed for a healthy life — without supplements, minerals, or other sources.

So how can we assume that we can compress everything a cat needs into a bag of dry food?

If that were truly possible, we would have developed the same thing for ourselves long ago — given how much we love a quick fix.

I want to be clear: I am not against dry food. It can be a useful supplement, or a practical base for part of a cat's diet. But there is an enormous difference in quality between the products available. And most cat owners today rely almost entirely on dry food — because it is convenient, and because the manufacturers tell them it is complete.

Yet at the same time, the number of sick cats keeps rising.

That is not a coincidence.

What to Look For — and What to Watch Out For

When choosing food for your cat, the details matter enormously.

Look at the ingredient list. Ask yourself: how much real meat, fat, and protein is in this food? What vitamins and minerals does it contain? And critically — does it contain taurine?

Taurine is an amino acid that is absolutely essential for a cat's health. Cats cannot produce sufficient taurine on their own — they must get it from their food. Without it, serious health problems follow.

One important note: dog food does not contain taurine. Even if your cat seems interested in it, please do not feed it to them. It is not designed for their biology.

Some dry food products contain very little real meat, fat, or protein. They are largely filler. And while a cat may eat them — and even seem to prefer them — that preference can itself be a red flag.

I have heard people say that their cat has developed an allergy to meat. And it always makes me ask the same question: If this cat lived in the wild, would it simply not survive — because it is allergic to the very food its body is designed to eat?

That cannot be right. Allergies are not random. They arise from internal imbalances — and those imbalances almost always have a root in nutrition.

When very young kittens are affected, it is often because the mother had significant nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy. If the mother lacked essential vitamins and minerals, her kittens were born already starting from behind. This is exactly what happens with humans — if a mother does not receive the nutrients she needs during pregnancy, her child begins life at a disadvantage.

The same applies to our cats!

So What Should You Actually Feed Your Cat?

This is the right question — and the honest answer is: investigate thoroughly, and choose food with ingredients as pure and natural as possible.

Here is what I recommend considering:

Dry food — can work as part of the diet, but quality varies enormously. Choose products with high meat content, minimal additives, adequate taurine, and ingredients you can actually recognize. Not all dry food is equal.

Canned / wet food — a good supplement or primary source. Again, look for high meat content and minimal additives. Wet food also provides important hydration, which many cats on dry food diets are chronically missing.

BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) — many cat owners are moving toward raw feeding, and there is good reason for this. Raw food closely mirrors what a cat would eat in nature. However, if you go this route, it is essential to ensure that your cat still receives all the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids they need. Raw meat alone is not always sufficient. The full nutritional picture must be covered.

What If Your Cat Refuses to Change?

Cats can be incredibly resistant to dietary changes — and this is actually more meaningful than it might seem.

At first glance, you might think: surely a cat would naturally choose what is good for them? In the wild, with access to hundreds of different prey animals throughout the week, they would be getting an extraordinary variety of nutrients — and their instincts would guide them well.

But that is not the world most cats live in today. Our influence on their environment — and on what they have been fed since kittenhood — has affected their taste, their smell, their preferences, and their gut microbiome.

Some commercial dry foods contain additives that quite literally make cats prefer them over healthier options. This is not so different from how humans develop cravings for sugar, caffeine, or processed food. The preference is real — but it is not the same as what the body actually needs.

So if you switch to better food and your cat turns their nose up at it — do not give up. Find a transition strategy that works for your cat. Some respond well to gradual mixing. Others need more patience. The goal is a smooth transition, not a battle.

The Bigger Picture

A cat in the wild would consume over 1,000 different prey animals throughout the year — each one bringing a different nutritional profile, a different set of vitamins and minerals, a different contribution to the whole.

Today, many cats eat the same food, from the same bag, every single day of their lives.

The body notices. Slowly, quietly — it notices.

Symptoms and illness do not appear overnight. They begin as small imbalances. If those imbalances are not addressed, they grow. And eventually, they become the diseases we are seeing more and more of in cats today.

What you put in your cat's bowl every day either moves them toward health — or away from it.
