Why does your cat bring home the loot — and what do you actually do about it?
You open the door. Or you walk into the kitchen in the morning.
And there it is.
A bird. A mouse. Half a mouse. Something you would rather not look at too closely.
And your cat — sitting right next to it — looking at you like they just did the most impressive thing in the world.
Because in their mind? They absolutely did.

Why Does Your Cat Bring Home Their Prey?
The cat is a born hunter. This instinct runs deep — it is not something they choose, and it is not something that disappears just because they have a full food bowl waiting for them inside.
In fact, many cats that bring home prey have access to food all day. They are not hungry. They are not struggling to survive. And yet — when the opportunity for a good catch presents itself, something in them simply cannot let it pass.
The hunt is not about hunger. The hunt is about being a cat.
Some cats bring their prey home first — to display it, to show what they have caught — before eating it. Others have no interest in eating it at all. They play with it, carry it, and then walk away. The catch was the point. The game was the reward.
This is their nature. And it is actually something beautiful, once you understand it.

What Is Your Cat Really Telling You?
There are several ideas about why cats bring their prey home — and honestly, I think there is truth in more than one of them.
Some believe it is maternal instinct — the drive to bring food back to the family. But it is not only female cats that do this. Male cats do it just as often. Which tells us something important: this is not just about feeding the young. This is about belonging, sharing, and connection.
Cats that bring you their prey are, in their own way, including you. They are showing you what they are capable of. They are sharing their experience with someone they trust.
Others believe that bringing prey home is an act of affection and loyalty. And I think that is exactly right. Cats become a deeply important part of the family — and they demonstrate that bond in the way their nature allows them to.
Your cat is not trying to horrify you. Your cat is showing you love.

The Playful Side of It All
Cats are also simply playful creatures. Engaging in play brings them to life — even the most reserved cat cannot fully resist a good chase, a moment of triumph, a chance to celebrate a catch.
We know from our own lives that when something is fun and exciting, we throw ourselves into it. We look forward to it. We put in extra effort without even noticing — because it brings us joy.
It is exactly the same for our cats.
And here is the thing: that instinct, that playfulness, that joy in achievement — it is also your greatest tool when it comes to teaching your cat new behavior.

So What Do You Actually Do About It?
Let's be honest — even if you understand and appreciate why your cat does this, you probably do not want to find prey on the kitchen floor every morning.
The good news is that this is absolutely something you can work with. But the approach matters enormously.
Start by choosing a designated area — somewhere outside, or in a place you can tolerate — where you would like your cat to leave their catch.
When your cat comes home with their loot, guide them calmly to that area. And then praise them. Enthusiastically. Let them know, in no uncertain terms, that they are incredibly talented and that this is exactly the right place for their trophy.
Cats — just like us — respond powerfully to recognition. When they realize how good they are at something, they will go above and beyond. Praise is not just kindness. It is your most effective training tool.
If your cat leaves a surprise without you seeing it, take the catch to the designated area and call your cat over. Praise them for it. Let them connect that spot with positive feedback. Repeat this consistently, and you will be amazed at how quickly they begin to understand.

What Never Works — And Why
Scolding. Yelling. Punishment.
I want to be very direct here: negative reinforcement does not work with cats. It does not just fail to help — it actively makes things worse. It erodes your cat's trust in you, and it makes future training far more difficult.
Cats are sensitive, intelligent animals. They do not understand why you are upset. What they understand is that something they did — something that felt completely natural and even celebratory to them — caused a reaction that felt threatening or confusing.
The result? A more anxious cat. A cat that trusts you less. And a behavior that does not change.
I have not yet met a living creature — animal or human — who does not respond better to being told they have done something right, rather than being told they have done something wrong.
Everything is possible with the right approach.
If something is not working, that is not a sign that your cat cannot learn. It is a sign that the method needs to be adjusted. That is our responsibility as cat owners — to keep trying, keep adapting, and keep meeting our cats where they are.

Your Cat Is Doing Everything Right
Here is what I want you to take away from this:
A cat that hunts, that plays, that brings their catch home — that is a cat with a healthy instinct, a strong drive, and a desire to be part of your world.
That is not a problem. That is a healthy cat doing exactly what a healthy cat does.
Your job is not to suppress that. Your job is to work with it — to understand it, to channel it, and to build the kind of relationship where your cat trusts you enough to follow your guidance.
And that relationship? It starts with understanding who your cat truly is.
