You've tried the light food. You've measured the portions. You've followed every instruction on the bag.
And your cat is still overweight.
You're not doing anything wrong. But you've been given the wrong solution to the wrong problem.
Let me explain why — and what is actually happening inside your cat's body.

"The Myth of "Too Many Calories"
The conventional approach to an overweight cat is almost always the same: reduce portions, switch to "light" food, increase activity if possible.
This approach treats excess weight as a simple maths problem. Fewer calories in, less weight on the body.
But here is what that approach ignores: why is the body storing the weight in the first place?
Because weight gain is not the problem. Weight gain is the body's response to a problem that exists somewhere deeper.

What Is Really Going On
Cats are obligate carnivores. Every part of their biology — their digestive system, their metabolism, their hormonal regulation — is designed around animal protein and fat as the primary fuel source.
Not grain. Not starch. Not the corn, wheat, rice and potato that form the majority of most commercial dry cat food.
When a cat eats a diet that is heavily carbohydrate-based, several things happen at the biological level:
Blood sugar dysregulation. Carbohydrates convert rapidly to glucose. The feline pancreas, which was never designed to manage large carbohydrate loads, releases insulin to handle the spike. Over time, the cells become less responsive to insulin. The body compensates by producing more. Fat is stored, not burned. The cat gains weight regardless of how much or how little it eats.
Hormonal disruption. Chronic insulin dysregulation alters the hormonal environment throughout the body. Leptin — the hormone that signals satiety — becomes less effective. The cat feels perpetually hungry even after eating. The owner feeds more. The cycle deepens.
Chronic low-grade inflammation. Fat tissue — particularly visceral fat — is metabolically active. It produces inflammatory compounds that circulate through the body, affecting every organ system. The body enters a state of chronic low-level inflammation that makes weight loss physiologically very difficult.

The "Light Food" Problem
Here is something the pet food industry does not advertise clearly:
Most "light" or "weight management" cat food reduces calories primarily by reducing fat — and compensates by increasing carbohydrates.
For a cat whose overweight is driven by carbohydrate-induced insulin dysregulation, this is precisely the wrong direction.
Less fat, more carbohydrate, same underlying metabolic problem — but now the cat is also hungry and deficient in the fat-soluble nutrients their biology depends on.

What Actually Works
Addressing the root cause of feline overweight means:
Removing the carbohydrate overload. Transitioning away from grain-heavy dry food toward moisture-rich, high-protein, low-carbohydrate food that matches feline biology.
Restoring hormonal balance. When the dietary input changes, the insulin response normalises. Leptin sensitivity improves. The body stops being stuck in "storage mode."
Reducing systemic inflammation. Correct nutrition reduces the inflammatory burden that was making weight regulation physiologically impossible.
Supporting cellular function. Nutrients work at the cellular level to restore the signalling that allows the body to regulate itself normally.
This is not about restricting your cat. It is about giving your cat's body what it needs to stop holding onto weight — from the inside.

The Body Is Not Broken
Your cat's body is not failing. It is responding logically to the conditions it has been placed in.
Change those conditions — and the body changes with them.
I have seen cats that were "always going to be big" reach healthy weights within months of nutritional correction. Not through starvation. Not through endless portion anxiety. Through giving the biology what it was actually designed to receive.
Your cat deserves that chance.
